DJI Phantom 3 Review

If you have ever seen a drone portrayed in the media you most likely were looking at a DJI Phantom–one of the most popular UAS/UAV the market. Last month, DJI introduced two versions of the Phantom 3 to the United States. They are the Advanced and Professional. These two versions of the Phantom 3 are very similar to one another, but feature some slight differences that justify a significant price variation. The main difference is the camera. If you are willing to pay a bit more for the DJI Phantom 3 Professional–priced at $1259 versus $999 for the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced–you will be rewarded with very high movie production quality thanks to a 4K camera.

Of course, comparing the two versions of the DJI Phantom 3 is less exciting than checking out the upgrades both versions sport compared to the DJI Phantom 2.

Comparing the DJI Phantom 3 to the Phantom 2

The DJI Phantom 3 features a lot of little tune-ups that yield a smoother ride and better flying..  Besides having a more stable base for landing landings and take off, the Phantom 3’s electric motors have been upgraded to provide more power and control. This extra oomph is audible during the boot process when preparing for take-off, and noticeable once you start buzzing the bird around. With added “go,” though,” you’re going to need added “stop,” and DJI has made upgrades with the brakes, as well.

The Phantom 3’s Air Brake Technology is a great addition for those that appreciate better handling. The drone can make even quicker directional changes while also compensating for that added horsepower, allowing quick stops.

Upgraded DJI Pilot App

The DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and Professional operates off of the DJI pilot app; the same interface used to fly the DJI Inspire 1.  This new application provides a user-friendly interface and upgraded features. The Return To Home (RTH) option is a useful tool to get your Phantom 3 back quickly. While our pilots tend to like to do things “manually,” we’re not ashamed to admit we love this feature: it works great and is easy to use! There have been many instances of fly aways due to loss of link, or a low battery, and in earlier phantom models this aspect was implemented as failsafe. Now DJI has turned this into a workable feature in form of a button located on the controller.

Some other features we’re enjoying include: auto takeoff and landing, customizable switches, image capturing buttons, flight simulator, and an improved battery status bar indicator that incorporates the Customizable Return to Home feature.

DJI Phantom 3 Improves on the Original

Spending time with the drone, the DJ I Phantom 3 developers really put a lot of thought refining aspects of the Phantom 2. Flying the Phantom 3 really is an exciting-new-fun experience. I will bring a smile to your face every time.

Looking to Upgrade? Read this first…

One thing to consider about when upgrading to the Phantom 3 from the Phantom 2 is battery compatibility.  The Phantom 3 Advanced and Professional  use a four cell LiPo battery–not the three cell used by the Phantom 2.
